Informational & QRs

This is a fun informational writing project to get students up and out of their seats and moving while learning!

A few of the Common Core Anchor standards addressed in this project are:

W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts ro examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

W.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

W.6 Use technology, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.

W.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.

I started off by creating 15 informational slides that included facts I wanted my students to know. There were five facts about George Washington, five facts about Abraham Lincoln, and five facts about the President's job today. I created each slide in PowerPoint, and then uploaded each slide individually to my DropBox account as a PDF file.

After they were uploaded, I clicked "Share Link" for each slide. This generates a URL, which I was able to use to create the QR codes with. When students scanned the QR codes, they were taken directly to the slide with the information about the presidents. By creating the slides myself, I was completely in control of what the students would see and be learning. I was also able to tailor the project directly to my class' needs and reading ability (which is impossible to do with some websites).

As they scanned, students used the graphic organizer to record and organize the information they were learning.

Students then used their pre-writes to complete an informational writing piece about the presidents. Here is an example of the final writing project completed in Pages by a 2nd grade student.

Happy scanning!

    2. Wow!. Thank you for your generosity. I'm learning so much about incorporating technology from your blog. I was afraid that you had abandoned it. I actually got the update through my blog feed and popped in here to express my thanks.

    1. Hi Donna! Thank you so much for stopping by! The correct QR codes can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3vt_db5_r7yYWxXOWJvbkxUWTA/view?usp=sharing We've found that if the Dropbox app is not installed on the devices you are using (you do not need to be signed in, just have the app installed) it will say "Install App" and "Safari cannot open the page because the address is invalid". So make sure the Dropox app is installed. :) Thanks again!
